Opening a Scotseal for inspection

Using pliers or end cutters, uncurl the outer cup at the leading edge (where it installs into the hub).

Work your way around the entire circumference of the seal until the inner cup is free.

Remove the inner cup.

NOTE: Be sure you wear gloves or use a shop cloth to protect your hands, the open edges are very sharp.

You can now remove the packing by lifting it out, as shown.

This should be done carefully, because you don't want to disturb the lip surfaces or markings. They're the major clues as to what went wrong. Set the outer cup aside for the time being.
